1. Wolf Management in Wisconsin

3. Natural History of Wolves
- Life facts on wolves as individuals, packs and wolf populations
- Wolves and Deer - basics of deer ecology as influenced by winter and wolves
Lunch – 11:45 to 12:30: NOTE: Participants planning to participate in the field component need to bring their own lunch and dress for the weather. Field Component – 12:45 to about 3:00 pm.
While in the field, TWIN volunteers hope to show and interpret wolf sign, discuss census survey techniques, and discuss winter ecology of other creature signs opportunistically encountered.
Special Considerations for Participants:
1. AGE Recommendations RESTRICTED 12 years old and up due to content (we discuss SEX and detailed biological topics)
2. Persons with AMBULATORY ISSUES need to evaluate as the outdoor outing component is strenuous.
3. Persons must provide warm winter clothing, water-proof, insulated boot wear for the afternoon component.
Dick Thiel is a retired Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist who initiated the wolf recovery program in the 1980’s. He has authored several books on wolf recovery that will be available at the Karner Korner Nature Store inside the Visitor Services Center on the day of the event. Dick has served for a time as Chairperson of Timber Wolf Information Network, a Wisconsin – based wolf education organization he helped found in 1989, and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Wolf Center, based in Minnesota. He remains active in wolf matters, conducting educational workshops for both organizations which are dedicated to presenting accurate, science-based information on wolf ecology, and as a consultant.
