TITLE: Director of Special Education & Pupil Services
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Tomah Area School District is seeking a highly qualified
Director of Pupil Services with the vision and skills to direct the planning, delivery, assessment, and ongoing improvement of all pupil services programs. The Director of Pupil Services supervises all special education, pupil services, and alternative education staff. Reporting to the District Administrator, this position is responsible for the planning, delivery, assessment, and ongoing improvement of all pupil services programs. The starting date for this position will be July 1, 2026.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Articulates a clear philosophy and shared vision of learning.
2. Promotes close working relationships with all staff.
3. Participates as an active member of the administrative team.
4. Upholds board policies and follows administrative guidelines/procedures.
5. Promotes a professional image of the school district.
6. Maintains open and effective communications.
7. Promotes the district’s mission and vision.
8. Serves as an information resource.
9. Keeps staff informed about emerging issues.
10. Analyzes data to improve school operations.
11. Helps develop and implement the district’s continuous improvement plan.
12. Identifies and develops partnerships that enhance district services.
13. Provides staff leadership and consensus development.
14. Implements strategies and time frames to accomplish organizational objectives and advances the change process.
15. Administers the board-approved budget for assigned areas of responsibility.
16. Coordinates the “child find” and preschool/kindergarten screening programs.
17. Oversees IDEA Part-B applications and program reporting requirements.
18. Encourages program innovations.
19. Pursues funding/grant opportunities and prepares grant/foundation applications.
20. Implements funded proposals and complies with reporting requirements.
21. Participates in staff selection and orientation processes.
22. Expresses high expectations and monitors staff performance (e.g., observations, evaluations, meetings, etc.).
23. Monitors education laws, rules, and regulations. Recommends administrative procedures that facilitate compliance with legal mandates. Participates in due process procedures as requested.
24. Complies with state and federal policies/procedures for the education of students identified as having a disability. Ensures that services are provided in the least restrictive educational environment.
25. Participates in parent conferences and student planning meetings as needed.
26. Helps staff resolve problems that impede student participation in appropriate learning activities.
27. Participates with suspension/expulsion hearings as needed.
28. Upholds applicable local, state, and federal laws.
29. Initiates referrals to community resources as needed (e.g., legal, health, welfare, etc.).
30. Serves as a school contact for service providers.
REQUIREMENTS: Director of Special Education and Pupil Services license required.
